Located on the western side of the Pico Mountain Natural Reserve, Furna do Frei Matias is a lava tunnel that has an average length of 650 meters, consisting of several entrances and bifurcations.
What draws the attention of this cave is its mythical space, where many believe that there lived a hermit refugee, in absolute solitude.
All this mystery attracts more and more tourists, due to the ease of access, because it is close to the parish of Madalena. It is worth mentioning that in 2003, part of the structure of the furna suffered a collapse, being affected its main entrance and necessary that a new entrance was open.
